Recognized Japanese-American philosopher Yuriko Saito will present her reflections on how aesthetics shape our everyday lives – from perceptions of beauty, aging, and disorder to design, architecture, and our relationship to nature and the environment. Her work shows that aesthetics is not just the domain of art, but influences our everyday decisions, values, and way of life.
Saito served as a professor of philosophy at the Rhode Island School of Design for nearly four decades, where she taught Japanese aesthetics, the aesthetics of nature, and environmental ethics in art and design. She is the author of several significant publications, including the book Everyday Aesthetics (2008), which has fundamentally influenced contemporary thinking about the aesthetics of everydayness. The event is held on the occasion of the publication of the Slovak translation of the book, prepared by Jozef Kovalčik based on the original published by Oxford University Press.
The lecture on the topic The Role of Care in Everyday Aesthetics will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at 6:00 PM in the Emil Belluš Auditorium at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (Námestie slobody 19).
"I am looking forward to visiting Slovakia for the first time and sharing with you my views on how care and aesthetics intersect in our everyday lives and support each other," said Yuriko Saito.
Admission is free (until space is full).
