The Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava invites you to a public lecture titled “From Plans to Practice: Urban Planning in Brazil – Where Theory Meets Action”, which will take place on October 16, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 117.
The lecture will be delivered by Larissa Menescal, an urban planner and public policy specialist with more than fifteen years of experience in sustainable urban development, climate resilience, and gender equality. She has served as President of the Fortaleza Planning Institute (City of Fortaleza) and the Brazilian Network of Planning Institutes (InREDE). In addition to her institutional work, she acts as an independent consultant and lecturer with global organizations and professional networks.
The lecture will explore how urban planning in Brazil and Latin America is shifting from theoretical frameworks to practical implementation, highlighting the tools, challenges, and innovations along the way. Through concrete examples, it will illustrate the use of land value capture, participatory planning, and data-driven approaches. Special attention will be given to experimental microurbanism as a method for rapidly testing and refining policies, connecting theory with practice while addressing issues of climate resilience, gender equality, and sustainable urban development.
The lecture is open to the public and will be held in English. Students, faculty, and all those interested in urban planning and sustainable city development are warmly welcome.
