Dialogue between design and science - FAD STU design research projects at the 25th edition of Designblok festival in Prague.
Design research is not looking for 'correct' answers. It raises questions that are worth investigating. Can interior materials remove air pollution? Can we 'design with time'? How to use generative tools in the design process? Six doctoral research projects connect scientific disciplines and spotlight new positions of design.
October 4-8, 2023, Institute of Design of the Faculty of Architecture and Design STU in Bratislava (FAD STU) presents six doctoral design research projects at the Designblok, International Design Festival in Prague. Tibor Antony, Matej Dubiš, Petra Hurai, Vlasta Kubušová, Martin Mjartan and Soňa Otiepková explore a wide range of topics that are linked by interdisciplinary cooperation and the search for new roles of design. Presented by the platform for design research and technology transfer Trimtab | Prototyping Change, the DESIGN × SCIENCE installation presents the projects of doctoral students from the time period 2014-2023, devoted to a wide range of research topics: biophilia (Tibor Antony), generative design (Matej Dubiš), perception of time (Petra Hurai), design-driven innovations in biomaterials ( Vlasta Kubušová), contemporary craft production (Martin Mjartan) and research in the field of surface coloring of bioplastics (Soňa Otiepková).
Installation DESIGN × SCIENCE
The exhibition system used in the DESIGN × SCIENCE installation was designed by doctoral design students František Dorko and Martin Sombathy (Institute of Interior and Exhibition Design, FAD STU). The installation uses residual plates of SymaLITE® material from the automotive industry. The design was created as part of an ongoing project of doctoral students, which explores the possibilities of applying residual materials from local Slovak manufacturers in the context of interior design. The goal of the installation design was to achieve the lowest possible environmental impact, modularity and the reusability of the system at other occasions. The exhibition system was prototyped directly by the authors, using the technologies of the FAD STU University Science Park.
"The DESIGN × SCIENCE installation, presented at the 25th annual Designblok Prague International Design Festival, is the first group presentation of FAD STU's doctoral design research projects abroad. In other words, it is itself a prototype. Let's give the Trimtab platform a chance to open a dialogue and become an invitation to create new collaborations," summarizes the project exhibition curator Michala Lipková.
Platform Trimtab | Prototyping Change
The aim of the collaborative platform Trimtab (tr1mtab.com), founded and developed since 2018 by Michala Lipková from the FAD STU’s Institute of Design, is to actively seek new industrial partnerships and accelerate technology transfer thanks to design research and multidisciplinary cooperation across and beyind STU faculties. The name of the platform is inspired by the metaphor of a "miniature rudder", which was often used by the American architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller to illustrate the multiplier effect of small changes that can affect even the largest systems. 'Prototyping change' in the name of the platform communicates the idea of contributing to positive change thanks to the designer's input into scientific-technological projects, in the spirit of "Fullerian" system thinking and interdisciplinary cooperation. The author of the visual identity of the platform, working with the ambiguous, changing symbol of the letter "T" and the number "1", is the graphic designer Peter Chmela.
